The gospel for 8th Sunday of Pentecost- Matthew 13:47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48 when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
There were a lot of fishing stories recapped at the house on Quinault Loop, Port Townsend, WA when the family would go to visit. Some of them were about scooping up too many of the fish in Discovery Bay by the purse seiners. They ruined fishing for the residents because they scooped up the good and the bad. This left the bay overfished. Another one was of the dogfish (sharks) getting caught too often when fishing for Salmon and the cursing on the boat when another was landed. They were never thrown into the fire, but great gnashing was expressed when one was landed as it was tossed back overboard.
It is quite an experience to use rod and reel to catch either salmon or a dogfish. The fight c an be about the same, but the reward is different. It took me many trips to Puget Sound to catch a silver. But the smile on my father-in-laws face made it well worth the wait.
Our heavenly Father has an equally big smile every time we do his will.
“Well done good and faithful servant” is worth the wait.
