Romans 7: 15 “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. 17 But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me”.

The entire text is a reminder of our human state. Martin Luther before he came to be enlightened on “Grace” would have loved this passage as he reflected in the monastery. The passage is so true for many of us. Because of sin we do what we do, act like we act, and struggle against our nature and our neighbor.

But verse 25a gives us hope and assurance, “24 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25a Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” We have been saved by Jesus Christ and given an out from our wretchedness. New days, new ways, new life, thanks be to God! Go out and follow the new way in Christ Jesus!
